It is now being dubbed as “The Cut Heard ‘Round the World” (OK, maybe just this dork is calling it that). Well, at least it’s the cut heard halfway ’round the MMA world.
UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones posted a video on his official Instagram account Thursday revealing a nasty cut over his right eye that required seven stitches to close. Fans were frantic the gash would put his grudge match against Daniel Cormier in jeopardy.
UFC president Dana White quickly killed the chatter by claiming there was still plenty of time for the laceration to heal before UFC 178 comes rolling around in 58 days. That might be true, but that doesn’t mean the fresh slash won’t be much easier for Cormier to open up again come showtime – as Cormier spotlighted immediately after Jones released his video.
Case in point, Jones’ cut sure looks awfully familiar – so says Alexander Gustafsson, from all the way over in Sweden. The tear is located in the exact same spot Gustafsson lit up at UFC 165.
Fast forward nearly 10 months and the wound is still haunting Jones. And that’s something “The Mauler” clearly takes great pride in.
“@jonnybones, really sorry for the deep cut I gave you in our last fight,” Gustafsson wrote on Instagram along with the image above. “At least you will have a memory from me every time someone opens it up for you. To not make your other eye jealous for not having a cut, I promise to leave a memory on that one as well next time we fight. Now, take care.”
Gustafsson, who is the only man to take Jones to the brink of defeat in last September’s controversial unanimous decision loss, was forced out of their rematch with a knee injury. Cormier gladly stepped in and will challenge Jones for his throne September 27 inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
