And then there were nine, as in only nine bouts that will appear in tonight’s “UFC Fight Night: Jacare vs. Mousasi” event after doctors refused to clear featherweight Charles Oliveira (pictured) for his scrap against Nik Lentz.
According to the UFC, Oliveira was getting over a viral infection he contracted in Brazil, but suffered a setback earlier this week that caused him to come in heavy at Thursday’s weigh-ins. Instead of trying to shed the excess four pounds, Oliveira decided to conserve what little energy he had and stay at 150 pounds, forfeiting 20 percent of his purse to Lentz in the process.
This morning, the promising 24-year-old fell ill again and couldn’t obtain medical clearance to compete tonight.
According to reporter Ariel Helwani, UFC president Dana White will pay Lentz his show and win money. Oliveira gets nothing.
UFC officials didn’t confirm which fight would get promoted to the main card in its place, but based on the current bout order, Al Iaquinta vs. Rodrigo Damm would get the nod.
Not that it really matters since Fox Sports 1 is broadcasting the entire event.
Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut serves as host.
