It is being reported that the UFC is currently working on putting together an interim heavyweight title bout at UFC 111 on March 27th in Newark, New Jersey. Frank Mir and Shane Carwin have been targeted as the opponents who will vie for the interim belt while Brock Lesnar remains sidelined.
MMAJunkie was the first to break the news earlier this morning as it seems like the UFC doesn’t want to keep the heavyweight division on hold much longer.
After Frank Mir smashed Cheick Kongo at “UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez,” Mir impressed UFC president Dan White so much that he had to put him right back into the title fold.
Carwin on the other hand was the #1 contender scheduled to face Lesnar at UFC 106 before he became ill.
Late last night Carwin told fans via his website that he had news regarding an upcoming bout, but he was extremely vague with the details.
“I have an opponent and date. More details will follow stay tuned,” the undefeated fighter wrote.
UFC 111 at the Prudential Center has the potential to be a huge event if a heavyweight title bout is added to the welterweight title bout between Dan Hardy and Georges St-Pierre.
