They’re calling it StoolGate. Saturday’s middleweight shootout between Yoel Romero (pictured) and Tim Kennedy was clearly UFC 178‘s most controversial bout.
Romero won the opening round, but Kennedy had him gassed and battered as the second frame wound down. Romero appeared to be out on his feet as he struggled to get back to his corner.
Romero’s corner then pulled what UFC president Dana White called “the oldest, dirtiest trick in combat sports” by putting excessive Vaseline on his eye and “forgetting” to remove the stool when they left the cage in order to buy Romero additional time to recover.
It worked, because referee “Big” John McCarthy told them to come back and wipe down Romero’s eye and body, then they were slow in leaving with the stool.
Romero captured his second (or third) wind and rallied to TKO Kennedy, who was livid after the fight.
UFC 178 took place inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
