‘UFC 178: Johnson vs. Cariaso’ Live Results and Play-by-Play

“UFC 178: Johnson vs. Cariaso” took place Saturday night inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.  

Reigning flyweight king Demetrious Johnson defended his throne against Chris Cariaso in the show’s featured attraction. Donald Cerrone and Eddie Alvarez met in the co-main event.

In addition, perhaps the most anticipated scrap on the card, featherweights Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier collided.

Here are the official results and play-by-play from tonight’s action:

Preliminary Card:

Manny Gamburyan Defeats Cody Gibson via Submission (Guillotine Choke) at 4:56 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Gamburyan charges the center of the cage and shoots for a double-leg. Gibson stuffs the takedown attempt and tags him with a right for his troubles. Gibson doing a good job of using his reach advantage, pelting the Armenian with several unanswered jabs. Gibson pushes him to the ground and tries to fall on top, but Gamburyan quickly gets back to his feet. Gibson takes a knee to the groin and time is called. Game on. Gibson really looking good with his standup. Gamburyan scores a brief takedown. Gibson lands some strikes before the horn blares.

5thRound scores it: Gibson, 10-9.

2ndRound: Gamburyan lands a big right hand to start things off in the middle frame. He tried to go in for the kill, but Gibson quickly recovered. Gibson fires off a kick to the groin and time is called. Game on. Game on. Gibson working the body now. Gamburyan still looking for the homerun. Gibson was in complete control until falling on a short punch. Gamburyan pounces. He slaps on a guillotine choke. Gibson is forced to cry uncle with just seconds remaining in the round.

Kevin Lee Defeats Jon Tuck via Unanimous Decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-26) 

1stRound: They trade knees in the clinch. Lee tags him with a high kick as they separate. Tuck working leg kicks. Tuck lands a fancy spinning kick to the body, but pays for it as Lee slam shim to the canvas. Tuck promptly gets to his feet. Take takes a kick to the groin and time is called. Game on. Tucks thwarts a takedown attempt.

5thRound scores it: Lee, 10-9.

2ndRound: Tuck lands a cup shot, but Lee refuses to take time. Lee clocks him with a right hand. Tuck connects to the groin and time is called. Game on, but not before referee Jason Herzog deducts a point. Lee secures a takedown. Tuck tries a triangle choke from off his back to no avail. He now goes for an arm. Lee pounding away from the top. Herzog stands them up for some reason.

5thRound scores it: Lee, 10-8 after point deduction

3rdRound: Lee connects with a kick and follows up with a takedown. Nothing to write home about for either fighter on the ground. Lee seems content with riding out a decision win. Tuck still looking to end this with a submission from his back.

5thRound scores it: Lee, 10-9, and should run the table, 30-26.

Brian Ebersole Defeats John Howard via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

1stRound: Howard landing some nice punches in the clinch. Ebersole has him clinched against the cage. Referee separates them due to inactivity. Ebersole lands a leg kick. Ebersole used another leg kick to set up a nice takedown. He takes his back for a moment. Crowd is booing, but Ebersole has his back. Howard tosses him off and eats an illegal kick to the face. Time is called. Game on.

5thRound scores it: Ebersole, 10-9.

2ndRound: Howard comes out firing. He nails him with a kick to the body. Howard gets a body lock and drags him to the ground. Howard takes his back. He’s going for a rear-naked choke. Ebersole spins to top position.

5thRound scores it: Howard, 10-9.

3rdRound: Howard has him pressed against the fence. Ebersole fails on a takedown attempt. They’re clinching in the middle of the cage. Howard lands an elbow as they separate. Howard connects with a big inside-leg kick. Howard seems to be pulling away in this close contest. Howard thwarts another takedown attempt. This is a close fight. They  trade leg kicks, but Howard’s has more power behind them.

5thRound scores it: Howard, 10-9, and probably rallied to win, 29-28.

Stephen Thompson Defeats Patrick Cote via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

1stRound: Cote clinches him against the cage. Thompson reverses position. Two minutes in and nothing significant landed by either fighter. Cote connects on two nice leg kicks. Thompson scores with some punches. Cote catches a kick and shoots for a takedown. Thompson fends him off. Uneventful round…

5thRound scores it: Cote, 10-9.

2ndRound: Thompson comes out with greater aggression. Cote eating plenty of leg kicks. Thompson seems to be finding his groove here. Cote goes for a takedown to no avail. Another ho-hum round. Crowd getting anxious. Thompson nails him with a left hand.

5thRound scores it: Thompson, 10-9.

3rdRound: This one’s up for grabs. Thompson grazes him with a head kick. Cote having a tough time closing the distance. Speed has been an issue, too. Cote can’t finish the takedown. Crowd chanting, “Boring.” That’s pretty accurate at this point. Cote is losing and needs to turn it up.Thompson drops him with a right and follows him to the ground. He lets Cote back up. Cote is out on his feet. Cote telegraphs a shot. Spinning back kick for Thompson.

5thRound scores it: Thompson, 10-9, and should win, 29-28.

Jorge Masvidal Defeats James Krause via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)

1stRound: Krause beating him to the punch early. Masvidal lands a kick to the midsection. Masvidal  pounding away at the stomach. Krause looking for a takedown. Another powerful punch to the body by Masvidal. Masvidal is on the attack now.

5thRound scores it: Masvidal, 10-9.

2ndRound: Masvidal started off slow, but seems to be finding his groove. Krause lands a takedown. Masvidal uses a guillotine choke to reverse to top position. Three minutes to go. Krause eats a knee to the belly as they work their way up. Krause landing some punches to stay in it, but Masvidal appears to be in control. Krause gets him to the ground. Masvidal clocks him with two punches when they get up.

5thRound scores it: Masvidal, 10-9.

3rdRound: Masvidal continues to be the aggressor. He lands a punch and gets a body lock. He’s clinching Krause against the cage. Masvidal trips him to the mat. Kruase needs a finish, or a miracle. One-two combination by Masvidal. Krause clocks him with a solid right. And another. Masvidal drags him to the mat and lands in full-mount.

5thRound scores it: Masvidal, 10-9, and he likely swept the table, 30-27.

Dominick Cruz Defeats Takeya Mizugaki via TKO (Punches) at 1:01 in the 1stRound

1stRound: They exchanged rights to the mug to kick things off. Cruz gets a takedown and is bringing the pain. Mizugaki eating countless shots to the dome. That’s a wrap. Cruz couldn’t have dreamed of a better return. He made Mizugaki look like an absolute can, which he’s far from.

Main Card:

Cat Zingano Defeats Amanda Nunes via TKO (Strikes) at 1:21 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: Powerful inside leg kick by Nunes, and she follows up with an immediate takedown. Zingano goes for an armbar from her back. Nunes escapes. Nunes stands over her and dives in with a vicious right hand. She’s giving Zingano the business right now. Nunes is landing clean bombs from the top. Nunes goes for a leg lock, which was an error because Zingano is now on top. Big mistake. Zingano lets her back up. Big toss by Zingano.

5thRound scores it: Nunes, 10-9.

2ndRound: For all the bombs Zingano ate, her face surprisingly isn’t showing much damage. Zingano immediately scores a takedown and lands in side control. Now Zingano is standing over her, unleashing nasty leg kicks. Zingano dives on top. Nunes eating some sharp elbows. Violent ground-and-pound by Zingano. Zingano goes for an ankle lock and almost gets caught in a leg lock for her troubles. Nunes still on the bottom.

5thRound scores it: Zingano, 10-9.

3rdRound: This one’s up for grabs. Zingano tossing her around in the Thai clinch, landing knees to the midsection. She easily tosses Nunes to the canvas and lands in full mount. Zingano appears fresh as a daisy. Zingano raining down bombs. She cut her open with an elbow. Game, set, match, Zingano.

Yoel Romero Defeats Tim Kennedy via TKO (Punches) at :58 in the 3rdRound

1stRound: Romero clocks him with a left hand. He tags Kennedy with another powerful left. Kennedy’s bleeding from his nose. Romero starting to punish his legs with kicks. Kennedy catches a kick and briefly had a takedown. Romero secures a takedown for a moment.

5thRound scores it: Romero, 10-9.

2ndRound: Kennedy seems hesitant to close the distance. Understandable, because Romero is throwing heat. Two minutes in and nothing significant landing for either middleweight. Kennedy lands a few uppercuts in the clinch. Romero seems to be slowing. Romero goes for a takedown and almost gets caught in a guillotine choke. They’re back standing. Spinning back fist by Kennedy. Romero clinching him agains the cage. Romero looks gassed, but is flinging leather. Kennedy wobbles him with a right uppercut. He’s swarming on Romero. Romero was in trouble, then saved by the bell.

5thRound scores it: Kennedy, 10-9.

3rdRound: Romero’s corner pulling some bush league stuff by “accidentally” leaving the stool in the cage so he can recover. Romero looks out on his feet. Boom, he clocks Kennedy with a one-two combo and is giving him the business on the mat. He’s swarming him. Kennedy is gushing blood. Game over. Crowd boos because of the stool incident.

Conor McGregor Defeats Dustin Poirier via TKO (Punches) at 1:46 in the 1stRound

1stRound: McGregor misses on two fancy kicks. Poirier tags him with a leg kick and right. Solid left by Poirier. McGregor tags him with a left hand. They both look really relaxed. McGregor starts talking smack and goes in to attack. McGregor drops him with a left and pounces. It guess the hype is real…

Donald Cerrone Defeats Eddie Alvarez via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: Let’s see how Alvarez can solve the distance issue. Cerrone lands a body kick. They trade leg kicks. Alvarez landing countless punches to the dome while in the clinch. Cerrone doesn’t appear fazed. Cerrone thwarts a takedown attempt. Alvarez eats a body shot. Cerrone trickling blood from above his right eye.

5thRound scores it: Alvarez, 10-9.

2ndRound: Cerrone returns to firing off kicks. Alvarez goes for a takedown, but eats a knee for his efforts. Cerrone lands a knee to the midsection. Vicious leg kick by Cerrone. And another. Alvarez gets tagged in the right eye. Cerrone is starting to find his groove. Nothing from Alvarez in this round. Alvarez’s left thigh is badly bruised. Cerrone lands with a spinning back fist before the horn blares.

5thRound scores it: Cerrone, 10-9.

3rdRound: Alvarez goes for a takedown to no avail. Alvarez eats another leg kick. Cerrone takes a right. They’re trading shots in the pocket. Alvarez’s movement is drastically affected by leg kicks. Cerrone clocks him with a knee to the dome and swarms. Alvarez comes firing back. Alvarez tastes Cerrone’s shin. He doesn’t want seconds. Cerrone is landing pretty much whatever he wants. Alvarez takes more leg kicks and drops to the ground. Cerrone follows him there for some reason, Alvarez probably can’t even stand.

5thRound scores it: Cerrone, 10-9, and rallies to win, 29-28.

Demetrious Johnson Defeats Chris Cariaso via Submission (Kimura) at 2:29 in the 2ndRound (Johnson retains UFC flyweight title)

1stRound: Clear speed advantage for Johnson. He gets an easy takedown. Cariaso works his way to his feet for a moment. On a side note, there are a ton of fans leaving the arena right now. Cariaso gets to his feet. He lands a nice leg kick. Johnson returns fire and clocks him with a right and knee to the grill. Cariaso was probably saved by the bell.

5thRound scores it: Johnson, 10-9.

2ndRound: Cariaso slips and Johnson falls on top of him in the center of the cage. Johnson gets him in a crucifix and is dropping elbows and punches. Johnson moves to side control and quickly goes for a kimura. He steps over Cariaso’s head to strengthen the lock. Cariaso is forced to call it quits.
