Chad Mendes was convinced he had more than enough in his revamped arsenal to dethrone featherweight king Jose Aldo (pictured) Saturday at UFC 179. While Mendes put up a valiant effort, he came up short in a (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) unanimous decision defeat.
All five rounds were extremely competitive, which each fighter seemingly one punch away from ending things. There were knockdowns, and late punches, and eye pokes. Oh my!
Despite walking away his his title in tow, Aldo’s face was a bloody and bruised mess. Mendes’s mug was in far better condition.
Aldo is now up 2-0 on Mendes. Of course, nobody can forget his lights out knee to the grill at UFC 142.
They both took home an extra $50,000 for Fight of the Night honors.
Oh, and they each mentioned Conor McGregor in their post-fight speech.
UFC 179 took place inside Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
