It seems the UFC’s debut in Mexico was jinxed from the jump. The most devastating blow was obviously when heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was forced to bow out of the main event against Fabricio Werdum with a knee injury.
Diego Sanchez was hellbent on performing down south and was initially assigned to meet Norman Parke. Parke got injured, so a better tango with Joe Lauzon was arranged.
Sanchez and Lauzon both hurt their knees a few weeks later and were pulled.
Werdum now faces Mark Hunt (pictured) for the interim heavyweight title. Welterweights Jake Ellenberger and Kelvin Gastelum collide in the co-main event.
