Although former WEC lightweight top contender Donald Cerrone easily won the first 2Rounds against Ed Ratcliff on Saturday night at WEC 45, he entered the final stanza tied with Ratcliff on the scorecards due to multiple illegal groin strikes which costs him a total of two points.
He had done everything he could to dominate his opponent, however according to the judges’ scorecards, it was tied 18-18 with five minutes to go. The good news is that Cerrone had plenty left in the tank. In fact, what was left was even more nasty than what he had unleashed in the first 10 minutes.
“I had no choice but to finish,” Cerrone said of his mentality heading into the 3rdRound.
Cerrone was thoroughly in control of the matchup, syncing-in nice submission attempts in every round, however was deducted one point in the 1st and 2ndRounds for knees to Ratcliff’s sensitive parts. Sensing he needed to turn up the heat to ensure a W, Cerrone was able to lock a rear-naked choke at 3:47 to prevent him from dropping two straight for the first time in his career.
From the opening horn, it was no secret that Cerrone wanted to get the fight to the mat as quickly as possible. Despite Ratcliff’s sick Tae Kwon Do skills, Cerrone was able to consistently wrestle him to the ground and impose his superior submission game.
“I ain’t making no excuses,” Ratcliff graciously articulated. “He did what he was supposed to do.”
Well, I ain’t making no predictions on Cerrone’s future in the WEC’s 155-pound division, however the win should put him back in the title contention picture. Although, even with Saturday night’s win, Cerrone is still only .500 over his last four fights, so a 5Round affair isn’t in his immediate future.
