Is this real life? During Saturday’s UFC 181 pay-per-view broadcast, former WWE champion Phillip Brooks (pictured), better known to the world as “CM Punk,” announced he will no longer be fake fighting and will begin real fighting for the UFC.
“This is something that’s been in the back of my mind for a very, very long time,” Brooks sated. “I have a background in Kempo, I’ve done Brazilian jiu jitsu off-and-on for a very long time, but the idea of being able to step into the Octagon and find out what’s inside myself and test myself, is an opportunity I was not able to deny myself.
“I don’t think I would have been able to live with myself if I didn’t give this a shot. I feel like it’s now or never for me. I have a limited window, like all fighters do. I’m here for a fight. I’m here to either get my ass kicked or kick somebody’s ass.”
Brooks has never competed in a real mixed martial arts bout, but he has trained jiu jitsu extensively with the Gracies over the years. The 36-year-old said he will likely compete at middleweight, but welterweight is also on the table.
Brooks added that this isn’t a one-and-done deal. He’s here to see what he’s made of.
“I’m going to go all steam ahead,” Brooks added. “All system’s go after today. It’s going to be fun. I have nothing but respect for everybody here in the UFC. When it’s all said and done, when I’m finished, everyone will have to respect me because I came here to fight.”
Brooks said he will reveal shortly which camp he will be joining.
Terms of Brooks’ UFC deal were not disclosed.
