Light heavyweight champ Jon Jones (pictured) and Daniel Cormier embarrassed themselves and the entire sport of mixed martial arts when they decided to ignite a brawl inside the MGM Grand lobby in August – so said the Nevada Athletic Commission when they fined Jones $50,000 and Cormier $9,000 in September for their respective roles in the rumble.
Whatever black mark the melee may have left on MMA doesn’t mean the UFC won’t use it to their advantage in promoting the highly anticipated showdown. Let’s face it, the public fracas was pre-fight gold.
“I’m confused, was the brawl between dc and I good for the sport or bad for the sport? #UFCpromo,” Jones tweeted shortly after the clip aired on live TV.
It’s obvious how this may come across as hypocritical, but the answer is quite simple, Jon. The brawl was bad for the sport, but great for business. You’re bank account will soon serve as proof.
In addition to their stiff financial penalties, 10 percent of their respective purses for their upcoming scrap, Jones had to serve 40 hours of community service while Cormier had to do 20 hours.
UFC 182 goes down January 3 inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
