EliteXC officials announced at last night’s “ShoXC Challenger Series” event that reigning middleweight champion Robbie Lawler will indeed be defending his title against Joey Villasenor at the promotion’s final major event of the year on November 8th. It had been rumored for quite some time that Villasenor would be getting a rematch against Lawler on this card. The timing was right for both fighters, as come fight day it would have been four months since Lawler last defended his title, and six months since Villasenor entered the cage.
Villasenor has aready lost to Lawler once at Pride 32 in 2006. This would also be Villasenor’s second crack at an EliteXC belt, having perviously lost to Murilo Rua a little over a year ago.
Lawler’s last outing was against Scott Smith on EliteXC’s second CBS promotion, “Unfinished Business.” He successfully defended his title by TKO’ing Smith in the 2ndRound of their rematch. Lawler, a MMA veteran, hasn’t lost in his last six bouts, spanning over two years.
