Former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz (pictured) just can’t catch a break on the injury front. After finally ending his three-year hiatus due to various wounds, which forced the UFC to strip him of his 135-pound crown, Cruz announced Monday via Facebook that he has suffered an ACL injury to his right knee.

“It is with great sadness to report I have experienced another ACL injury,” Cruz wrote. “This time it’s in the right knee, opposite side of my first and second ACL injuries. Leading up to my last fight in September and after, I have practiced a very careful and methodical training and diet regime to keep my body healthy. Unfortunately, this is beyond my understanding and control.

“I don’t have a timetable for my return but trust and know I will pour my heart and soul into returning to the Octagon. I want to thank the UFC, my fans and my sponsors ahead of time for your support and prayers. I appreciate you more than you could understand.”

Cruz did not mention if surgery would be required to repair his knee.

Cruz had his broken left index finger operated on in January 2012, then tore his left knee while filming “The Ultimate Fighter Live.” The first procedure didn’t go according to plan, so he was forced to have a second surgery on his knee.

“The Dominator” was set to unify the title against then-interim champ Renan Barao at UFC 169. However, Cruz was forced to pull out of February’s bout after tearing his groin. He was immediately stripped of his belt and Barao was donned the division’s outright king.

During Cruz’s injury-plagued absence, the 135-pound landscape has changed significantly. Barao, who the UFC aggressively pushed as MMA’s best pound-for-pound fighter, is no longer king.

T.J. Dillashaw came out of nowhere to dominate Barao and now sits comfortably atop the throne.

It took Cruz all of 61 seconds to dispose of Takeya Mizugaki in his return at UFC 178. UFC president Dana White immediately granted Cruz next dibs at the title.

Unfortunately for the 29-year-old, he’ll have to wait a while longer to sniff another championship affair.
