‘UFC 183: Silva vs. Diaz’ Live Results and Play-by-Play

“UFC 183: Silva vs. Diaz” took place Saturday inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.  

Former UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva made his anticipated return to the cage after breaking his shin 13 months ago. Silva met Nick Diaz in the show’s featured attraction.

Welterweights Tyron Woodley and Kelvin Gastelum collided in the co-main event.

Here are the official results and play-by-play from tonight’s action:

Thiago Santos Defeats Andy Enz via TKO (Strikes) at 1:56 in the 1stRound

1stRound: Enz eats a jab to the chin and a leg kick. Santos is really working his kicks early on. He connects with a switch kick to the midsection. Enz finally counters with a right hand. Santos is going in for the quick kill, as he punches Enz against the fence. He floors Enz with a flurry of hooks. Santos is giving him the business on the canvas. Well, that didn’t take too long…

Ildemar Alcantara Defeats Richardson Moreira via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

1stRound: Moreira lands a leg kick to start things off. A lengthy feeling out period here. Moreira lands a combination of punches. He clinches Alcantara against the fence. Alcantara thwarts a takedown attempt and reverses, tripping Moreira backward to the mat and landing in full mount. Alcantara only lands one elbow before Moreira reverses. Moreira goes for a heel hook just before the bell sounds.

5thRound scores it: Moreira, 10-9.

2ndRound: Alcantara lands a straight left and a body kick. Moreira charges forward with punches but can’t close the distance. Moreira connects with a combo. Alcantara tags him with a kick to the midsection. Moreira secures a takedown before the round ends. This isn’t the most thrilling fight in the world, and the fans are letting them have it.

5thRound scores it: Alcantara, 10-9.

3rdRound: Moreira misses with a big left and eats a knee to the body for his troubles. Moreira goes for takedown, but Alcantara grabs the fence. Referee stops the action to issue a warning, but no point deduction. They restart on the feet. There’s a minute remaining in this forgettable tango…

5thRound scores it: Alcantara, 10-9.

Diego Brandao vs. Jimy Hettes*

Rafael Natal Defeats Tom Watson via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)

1stRound: They trade body kicks early. Natal lands a thunderous leg kick. He catches a kick and trips Watson to the ground for a moment. They are now taunting each other to exchange. A lot of kicking between the two. Just throwing it out there – Watson needs a new barber. Natal sends him to the fence with a kick to the body. He lands another one. Natal gets a brief takedown. Watson fights free but is planted right back on his butt. Watson gets up, then gets put back down.

5thRound scores it: Natal, 10-9.

2ndRound: The kicking battle continues. Natal is winning. Natal scores a takedown in the center of the cage. Watson is getting put on his back a lot, but he’s doing a good job of avoiding damage one the mat. Watson fights to his feet. Natal gets a body lock and is trying to drag him down. Watson gets loose. Natal plants him right back on the canvas just before the bell rings.

5thRound scores it: Natal, 10-9.

3rdRound: Watson needs a finish to win, but no more urgency than in the prior two rounds. He stuffs a takedown try by Natal. Natal is doing a great job of keeping his distance while landing . Natal stuns him with a solid jab and goes on the attack. Watson eats three unanswered punches to the face. Natal gets a quick takedown and is now clinching him against the cage. Natal secures another takdown.

5thRound scores it: Natal, 10-9, and he should run the table, 30-27.

John Lineker Defeats Ian McCall via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

1stRound: McCall continues to circle around the outside, moving in to throw and back out before getting tagged. Nothing significant landing for their flyweight. McCall gets a powerful double-leg takedown. McCall is very action from top position and Lineker hasn’t been able to fight free. Lineker is going for a leg lock from off his back.

5thRound scores it: McCall, 10-9.

2ndRound: McCall shoots but gets caught in a guillotine choke on the way down. It looks tight. McCall gets loose and fights to his feet. Solid left hook to the dome by Lineker. Time is called for unintentional headbutt. Lineker is really working the body with punches. Lineker is throwing bombs this round. McCall eats a left to the face, but counters with a right of his won. McCall shoots and gets caught in another guillotine. Only 15 seconds left, though.

5thRound scores it: Lineker, 10-9.

3rdRound: This is up for grabs, let’s see who wants it more. McCall continues to dance on the outside. Lineker eats a body kick in order to return land a one-two combo. Solid left hook by Lineker. Best shot of the round thus far. Lineker briefly falls to the ground after eating a right. It looked like Lineker had him hurt. Lineker is brawling now and starting to pull away.

5thRound scores it: Lineker, 10-9, and likely won, 29-28.

Derek Brunson Defeats Ed Herman via TKO (Punches) at :36 in the 1stRound.

1stRound: Brunson bringing the thunder early. He wobbles Herman with two straight lefts and pounces. Brunson is giving him the business. Herman is curled up in the fetal position. That’s a wrap.

Miesha Tate Defeats Sara McMann via Majority Decision (29-28, 29-27, 28-28)

1stRound: McMann tags her with a big right. She then floors Tate with a big right hand. McMann follows her to the ground and is caught in Tate’s full-guard. Three minutes remaining. Tate defending well off her back. McMann advances to side control. That was slick. McMann working for a mounted crucifix. Tate throws her legs over McMann’s face and tries a triangle from the bottom just before the horn blares.

5thRound scores it: McMann, 10-9.

2ndRound: Solid leg kick by McMann. McMann caught her in the clinch and was eating “Cupcake” up. Tate charges forward and eats a straight right for her efforts. Tate scores with a leg kick. McMann looks good. She clocks Tate with a right hand. McMann clinching her against the fence. Tate lands a knee to the midsection. Tate finally scoring with her hands. McMann goes for a takedown to change momentum, but gets caught in a guillotine choke. One minute left. Did Tate steal the round with that sub? Hmm…

5thRound scores it: Tate, 10-9.

3rdRound: McMann tosses her to the ground, but Tate scrambles to top position. Tate moves to side control. Three-and-a-half minutes left. Tate throwing short elbows to the body, nothing vicious. McMann now eating elbows to the face. Wow, came back from the dead to take the lead in this fight. Tate landing punches to the grill. McMann might be a former Olympic wrestler, but she can’t get off her back. Tate going for a kimura.

5thRound scores it: Tate, 10-9, and should have rallied to win, 29-28.

Main Card:

Thiago Alves Defeats Jordan Mein via TKO (Kick and Punches) at :39 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Alves charges the center of the cage. He lands an early leg kick. Clear reach advantage by Mein. Alves scores with a right hand. Mein with another thunderous leg kick. Sold, long jabs by Mein. Mein unleashing standing elbows, a la Jon Jones. Alves having trouble finding his range. Mein tags him with a one-two combo. Solid uppercut by Mein. Alves is getting overwhelmed. Mein hitting him with anything he wants.

5thRound scores it: Mein, 10-9.

2ndRound: Alves unleashes a lethal body kick that folds Mein over and pounces. A few punches on the ground. Game over. Wow, Mein was in complete control of this fight.

Thales Leites Defeats Tim Boetsch via Technical Submission (Arm Triangle Choke) at 3:45 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Boetsch unloading bombs, but nothing significant landing so far. Boetsch takes a finger to the eye and time is called. Game on. Leites charges with a flying knee and throws some punches. Solid left by Leites. Leites clinches him against the cage. Boetsch fends off a takedown attempt. Boetsch huts him with a right and follows the Brazilian to the ground.

5thRound scores it: Boetsch, 10-9.

2ndRound: Leites starts things off with a leg kick. He follows up with a left hook. Boetsch clocks him with a right. He lands another right hand. They trade thunder in the pocket. Boetsch appears to wobble him and continues assault. Leites takes top position after a scramble. Leites working for an arm triangle. Boetsch escapes the choke. Leites moves to full mount and slaps on another arm triangle on the other side. Boetsch is unconscious.

Al Iaquinta Defeats Joe Lauzon via TKO (Punches) at 3:34 in the 2ndRound

1stRound: Lauzon with a right hand. Iaquinta responds with a right to the body. Lauzon unleashes a flurry and stuns Iaquinta with a combination. Solid action from both lightweights. Iaquinta is getting comfortable in there. Lauzon answers with a one-two combo. Lauzon lands a knee and drops for a guillotine. Iaquinta easily gets free and they’re standing again. Iaquinta’s hands are very active.

5thRound scores it: Iaquinta, 10-9.

2ndRound: Solid right hand by Lauzon. Uppercut by Iaquinta. Lauzon shoots for a single-leg to no avail. Iaquinta scores with another body shot. He drops Lauzon with a right and goes for the kill. He’s laying the lumber on the ground, but lets a Lauzon to his feet to continue his punishment. Lauzon is taking a beating but is still standing. This needs to be stopped. Referee Marc Goddard finally puts an end to the assault. Great performance by Iaquinta and great heart by Lauzon.

Tyron Woodley Defeats Kelvin Gastelum via Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)

1stRound: Woodley with a clear speed advantage early, while Gastelum has the size advantage (obviously). Woodley starts off with a high kick. Then follows up with a right hand. A lot of feeling out between the two. The crowd boos for action. Gastelum has remained in the center of the cage as Woodley circles the outside for half the round. Crowd getting very anxious now. Woodley responds with a right hand. Woodley’s right is working for him, but just not enough of them. Not too much landed for either welterweight.

5thRound scores it: Woodley, 10-9.

2ndRound: Much of the same to start the middle stanza. Time is called after Gastelum takes a finger to the eye. Game on. Body kick by Woodley. Gastelum is far more active in this round. Solid right hand by Gastelum. He follows up with two kicks. Crowd still not happy. Woodley stuns him with a right hand. He smells blood. Gastelum appears to have recovered. Big inside leg kick by Woodley. Gastelum responds with a punch and kick of his own. Woodley nails him again with a right bomb. Gastelum eats another right as he goes for a body lock.

5thRound scores it: Woodley, 10-9.

3rdRound:
Gastelum comes out with more pressure to start the round, he must know he’s down. Woodley tags him with another right and blood starts trickling down from around his left eye. Gastelum is attacking the way someone who’s down should in final round. Woodley eats a big knee to the belly. Body kick by Gastelum. Woodley isn’t doing much in the final five minutes. Gastelum continues to attack, but can’t land anything vicious enough to finish.

5thRound scores it: Gastelum, 10-9, but likely lost, 29-28

Anderson Silva Defeats Nick Diaz via Unanimous Decision (49-46, 50-45, 50-45)

1stRound: “Big John McCarthy is the third man inside the cage. Diaz immediately starts talking smack to Silva, daring him to engage. Diaz lays on the ground and dares Silva to come. He does the same thing by putting his back against the cage. Diaz turns his back to Silva for a second. Diaz wants Silva to throw first and is taking away his counter game. Diaz scores with a left hand. Silva answers with a left leg kick. Silva finally going on the attack with a knee and a flurry. Silva scores with a right jab. Silva turning up the heat now. Big right by Silva. He follows up with a kick to the midsection. Diaz isn’t fazed. Silva tried to touch gloves at the end of the round and Diaz just walked away. Not sure he saw it.

5thRound scores it: Silva, 10-9.

2ndRound: Diaz stays in the center of the cage as Silva circles around the outside. It’s been like that for most of the fight and all of the first-half of this round. Not much action so far. Diaz is landing several leg kicks and Silva appears willing to eat them. Diaz shoots from across the cage and Silva easily stuffs the takedown attempt. Two solid lefts by Diaz. Silva counters with a leg kick and two punches. Silva lands a solid left hand. Loud body kick to the body by Silva. Silva lets Diaz punch him in the face a few times. Diaz goes to talk more trash after the bell. Close round.

5thRound scores it: Silva, 10-9.

3rdRound: Silva charges the center of the ring and is the aggressor early in the middle frame. Silva throwing plenty of leg kicks. Silva unloading those kicks to the front of the knee that Jon Jones made famous. Silva lands a flying knee to the face and follows up with a body kick. Silva is unfazed with Diaz’s leg kicks, he isn’t even checking them. Diaz’s face starting to get lit up. Silva tags him with a right. Silva is punishing Diaz’s lead leg. Diaz is still firing away.

5thRound scores it: Silva, 10-9.

4thRound: Jon Jones is up on his feet cheering. Both fighters still appear fresh. Diaz clocks him with a one-two combo. Heavy leg kicking game from both guys. Diaz is having trouble closing the distance. Also Silva seems faster as he’s loosened up his attack. Big leg kick by Silva. Diaz scores with some short elbows in the clinch. Silva clubs him with another leg kick. Diaz misses on three straight kicks that seemed to be in slo-mo. The crowd is booing the inactivity.

5thRound scores it: Silva, 10-9.

5thRound: Diaz needs a finish. He’s talking mad smack, leaving his hands down and daring Silva to engage. Diaz hits him with a left hand. Silva refuses to get caught up in Diaz’s games. Diaz lands another left over the top. Halfway through the last period. Silva hasn’t landed much here. Silva unleashes a fancy flurry that included a flying knee and spinning back kick, but nothing connected. Standing elbow by Silva. Diaz’s left eye is gushing blood now.

5thRound scores it: Silva, 10-9, and likely won 50-45.
