Apparently there is no RSVP deadline for “DYNAMITE!! 2009: Dream vs. WVR” on New Year’s Eve as the highly anticipated Japanese MMA/Kickboxing card will be bolstered with the addition of Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi.
Although nothing has been confirmed by Dream or World Victory Road, MMAJunkie.com spoke with Mousasi’s manager and M-1 Global executive, Apy Echteld, who confirmed that his client was already on a plane destined for the Orient.
Word is that Mousasi will stand opposite veteran Gary Goodridge in an MMA bout.
Goodridge holds a 23-19-1 record, however is currently on the wrong end of a four-fight streak. He was last seen getting submitted by Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem in November 2008 and hasn’t been heard from since.
Mousasi owns an impressive 27-2-1 record and is regarded by many as MMA’s best unknown superstar. After claiming Dream’s Middleweight Grand Prix in 2008, Mousasi voluntarily left the strap behind to focus on the 205-pound division.
The 24-year-old jumped State-side and quickly claimed Strikeforce’s light heavyweight title with a 60-second shellacking of then-champ Renato “Babalu” Sobral in August.
Fans last saw Mousasi dominate Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in a non-title affair last month at “Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers.” It was his 14th consecutive win.
