“The California Kid” is headed to the Philippines, and he’s taking Jersey boy Frankie Edgar along with him. On Wednesday, the UFC’s Japan website announced Urijah Faber (pictured) and Edgar will headline their long-awaited debut event in Manila.
SM Mall of Asia Arena hosts the May 16 card.
The shootout will take place at featherweight. Edgar, the former UFC lightweight champion, has competed at 145 pounds in his last four outings. “The Answer” will be riding a three-fight winning streak into the tango.
Faber, however, hasn’t fought at featherweight since April 2010 when Jose Aldo brutalized his left thigh with vicious kicks for the WEC title. The 35-year-old has gone 9-3 since shedding the excess pounds, but those three defeats were critical because they were all of the championship variety.
It is unknown if this is a permanent move back to featherweight for Faber or if it’s only for as long as training partner TJ Dillashaw dons the UFC bantamweight title.
No word if UFC Fight Pass, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2 or some combination of the three will make the event available for live viewing in America.
Here is the card’s current lineup:
Yao Zuikui vs. Nolan Ticman
Van Tae Hyun vs. John Tuck
Jean Ripen vs. Cajun Johnson
Roldan San Chang vs. John Delos Reyes
Urijah Faber vs. Frankie Edgar
