Imagine relentlessly pumping a guy for years as the best mixed martial artist to ever play the game, even to the point where you got into heated debates with media members who dared to think Fedor Emelianenko was MMA’s GOAT, only to have said fighter you were praising test positive for two different performance-enhancing drugs which essentially tarnishes his illustrious career.
If you thought you were surprised to hear Anderson Silva flunk his drug test, then how do you think it made UFC president Dana White feel? During Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 60 post-fight press conference, White gave us a sneak peek into his emotions.
“It screwed me up for a few days,” White revealed. “I was messed up for a few days after that. I’ve been a huge Anderson Silva fan, too, but we’ll talk about that on Wednesday.”
What’s going on Wednesday, you ask? With the failed drug test epidemic spreading rampantly across MMA, the UFC is in damage control mode and will host a press conference in Las Vegas on Hump Day featuring White and fellow UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta.
However, not everything that will be discussed by UFC brass Wednesday will be negative.
“Lots of bad s–t. We’re not going to be talking about fun things,” White said. “We’ll address all the things that have happened lately and what we’re going to do and what’s going to happen from here on out.”
Let’s hope the UFC has finally had enough with its fighters tarnishing their brand. Cheaters are always going to find a way to cheat, but random, year-round drug testing is the best way to stop the hemorrhaging. Tacking on stricter penalties will also help.
