For years, many pundits argued whether Gilbert Melendez (pictured) or Eddie Alvarez was the best lightweight not signed to the UFC. Now that they both compete in the octagon, it’s time to figure out who is the better fighter of the two.
On Monday, it was announced the 155-pounders will co-headline UFC 188.
The June 13 event goes down in a yet-to-be determined venue in Mexico City.
Melendez and Alvarez will be looking to bounce back from losses. Alvarez dropped a convincing unanimous decision defeat to Donald Cerrone in his UFC debut. He had won three straight before bolting from Bellator MMA.
Melendez was submitted by lightweight champion Anthony Pettis in December. After rattling off seven straight victories, “El Nino” has gone just 1-2 in the big leagues.
Here is the show’s current lineup:
Cathal Pendred vs. Dodger Montano
Tecia Torres vs. Angela Hill
Gilbert Melendez vs. Eddie Alvarez
Fabricio Werdum (UFC heavyweight interim champion) vs. Cain Velasquez (UFC heavyweight champion)
