Former Bellator light heavyweight champion Emanuel Newton (pictured) has a little Nick Diaz in him, because the Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletics found a little marijuana in him following last month’s loss to Liam McGeary.
Newton was issued a 90-day suspension, retroactive to his February 27 fight date and docked $3,000. He must also produce a clean exam before being reinstated.
Newton was upset for his crown in a hard-fought unanimous decision. He had won seven straight prior to meeting McGeary, with his last two outings being of the title defense variety.
Bellator 34 took place inside Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
The MMA Report first reported Newton’s flunked screening.
