UFC on FOX 15 is just four days away, but Tuesday was all about UFC on FOX 16. Shortly after announcing a rematch between bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw and Renan Barao would headline the July 25 show, a lightweight showdown with former champ Anthony Pettis and Myles Jury, as well as a top contender bantamweight brawl between Miesha Tate and Jessica Eye was added to the roster.
Pettis and Jury will co-headline the festivities.
Both 155-pounders will be looking to bounce back from disappointing losses. Pettis lost his title last month to Rafael dos Anjos in lopsided fashion.
“Showtime” had rattled off five consecutive victories prior to getting dominated by dos Anjos.
Donald Cerrone handed Jury his first professional defeat in 16 outings in January. “Cowboy” really took it to him and Jury had no answers. Let’s see how the youngster responds.
UFC president Dana White announced the bout between Tate and Eye a while ago, but a specific date wasn’t set until today.
The victor will advance to face the winner of August’s title tilt between champion Ronda Rousey and Bethe Correia. Rousey will once again be a heavy favorite to retain her throne.
Tate is already down 0-2 to Rousey, but she is the only woman to take “Rowdy” beyond the first round through 11 professional fights. “Cupcake” will be riding a three fight-winning streak into the tango. All of those wins came via decision.
Eye is 8-1 (1 NC) over her past 10 outings. Her win over Sarah Kaufman was overturned to a no contest after Eye tested positive for a “prohibited drug.” Which illegal substance that was found in Eye’s system was never revealed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the committee who oversaw the scrap.
Eye has never faced Rousey.
United Center in Chicago, Illinois serves as host.
Here is the card’s current lineup:
Miesha Tate vs. Jessica Eye
Anthony Pettis vs. Myles Jury
Renan Barao vs. TJ Dillashaw (UFC bantamweight champion)
