Oh, that Conor McGregor (pictured) sure knows how to grab headlines. The polarizing UFC featherweight claims he would easily dispose of boxing great Floyd Mayweather if they ever got into a fight.
This is the same Floyd Mayweather who is considered to be one of the greatest boxers of all time and arguably the best today.
Nonetheless, as the boxer vs. mixed martial artist debate rages on, McGregor believes it is impossible for someone with just great hands to beat a well-rounder fighter like himself.
“I don’t look at a man who’s expert in one area as a specialist,” McGregor told Esquire.com. “I look at him as a rookie in ten other areas. If you can box, what happens if I grab hold of your legs? If you put me face-to-face with Floyd Mayweather – pound-for-pound boxing’s best— if I fought Floyd, I would kill him in less than thirty seconds. It would take me less than thirty seconds to wrap around him like a boa constrictor and strangle him.”
Like former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy Couture demonstrated on former boxing champ James Toney at UFC 118, all a mixed martial artist needs to do is take the scrap to the ground and that’s pretty much all she wrote.
However, what’s interesting about McGregor’s comment is, “Notorious” is known for his deadly standup game. In fact, McGregor only has one submission victory in 19 professional fights. Furthermore, his two losses came via … submission.
One area where McGregor will certainly never beat Mayweather in is the money department. Mayweather is set to score a reported $180 million for facing Manny Pacquiao on May 2. McGregor, meanwhile, will make a small fraction of that amount when he challenges reigning featherweight king Jose Aldo at UFC 189.
