What’s better than having one Conor McGregor? Two Conor McGregors – that is if you’re a Conor McGregor fan, or UFC president Dana White, for that matter.
Paige VanZant (pictured) endured plenty of criticism entering Saturday’s scrap against Felice Herrig, with Herrig spearheading the hater charge. VanZant’s covergirl looks had a lot to do with it.
VanZant’s endorsement deal with Reebok after posting just one win in the UFC certainly didn’t help, either.
However, after dominating Herrig for 15 complete minutes for a lopsided (30-27, 30-26, 30-26) unanimous decision victory, VanZant silenced all of her detractors – at least for one night.
Following a primetime win on FOX, VanZant’s stock has never been higher. In fact, White says she’s quickly approaching, wait for it, Conor McGregor status.
“It’s almost like the Conor McGregor thing,” White said on the Fox Sports 1 post-fight show. “The guy bursts out of nowhere, explodes onto the scene and backs it up. And Paige VanZant did tonight, too. She looked unbelievable. And she is. She’s one of those people that has that thing.
“For instance, back in my room tonight, everyone wanted to meet Paige VanZant. Out of all the people that fought on this card tonight, everybody wanted to meet Paige VanZant.”
No matter what town the UFC travels to, White gets his fair share of celebrities kicking it with him in his dressing room. Here’s guessing most of the celebs that wanted to meet VanZant were guys trying to get some digits.
In any event, VanZant appears to be quickly headed down the path towards MMA superstardom. The world is at her 21-year-old fingertips.
Let’s be honest, her name even sounds like a stage name her management drummed up to help better build her brand.
Following last night’s win, VanZant will now likely crack the top 8 in the UFC strawweight division. Stiffer competition is ahead for “12 Gauge,” and I’m sure you’ll be tuning in to watch.
