Reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (pictured) is in a world of trouble. Not only did Jones allegedly flee the scene after reportedly hitting a car driven by a pregnant 25-year-old female Sunday morning, but the Albuquerque Police Department has revealed they found marijuana and a smoking pipe in the rental car Jones abandoned.
However, contrary to what the rumor mill has been suggesting, no traces of cocaine were found in the SUV Jones was driving.
According to the police report, an off-duty officer recognized Jones as he bolted from the scene. Jones returned to the car shortly after the accident to grab a “large handful of cash” before taking off again.
The rental car documents located inside the Buick were registered to Jonathan Jones.
Jones reportedly ran a red light which caused the three-car accident.
Vanessa Sonnenberg, the pregnant woman injured in the incident, was taken to a local hospital and treated for “non-life threatening injuries.”
Nothing was mentioned of possible injuries to any passengers of the third vehicle.
The APD have been unable to locate Jones for questioning. At this time, there has not been a warrant issued for his arrest.
The UFC issued a brief statement last night stating they are aware of Jones’ situation and are awaiting more facts before addressing the issue in greater detail.
This isn’t Jones’ first incident behind the wheel. The controversial 27-year-old was arrested in May 2012 for driving while intoxicated in New York after wrapping his $190,000 Bentley around a telephone pole. After pleading guilty, Jones was fined $1,000 and had his driver’s license suspended for six months.
Jones also tested positive for traces of cocaine prior to January’s UFC 182 victory over Daniel Cormier. Jones claimed he didn’t have a cocaine issue, but “dipped and dabbed” in various illegal substances during his college years.
Jones is currently slated to defend his crown against Anthony Johnson on May 23 at UFC 187.
