UFC 187, what was once one of the most anticipated MMA events in recent memory, has taken another hit.
One day after Jon Jones was stripped of his light heavyweight title and replaced by Daniel Cormier in the show’s featured attraction, an unknown injury has now forced Khabib Nurmagomedov (pictured) to withdraw from his pivotal lightweight shootout with Donald Cerrone.
MMAJunkie.com was the first to break the news. The UFC has yet to address the report.
The bout was a potential top contender matchup, with the victor possibly advancing to challenge Rafael dos Anjos for his freshly-minted crown.
Nurmagomedov owns an unblemished 22-0 professional record. “The Eagle” most recently took a unanimous decision over dos Anjos in April.
Cerrone is coming off January’s unanimous decision win over Benson Henderson. “Cowboy” has rattled off seven straight wins.
No word on what the UFC intends to do with Cerrone.
Cormier and Anthony Johnson battle for the vacant light heavyweight belt in UFC 187’s main event. Middleweight champ Chris Weidman defends his throne against Vitor Belfort in the co-main attraction.
MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada hosts the May 23 festivities.
