Anthony Johnson wasted no time in making Daniel Cormier (pictured) feel his power on Saturday at UFC 187. He dropped Cormier with a vicious right hand in the opening ticks of their shootout, but unfortunately for “Rumble,” that was about it for his highlights from tonight.
Cormier somehow survived and grinded his way into the second stanza.
Johnson came out fast again in the second, but Cormier took him down rather easily and wore Johnson out from there. He cut Johnson by his left eye with some sharp elbows just before the buzzer sounded. Johnson had trouble making it back to his corner.
Johnson threw what he had left in the opening seconds of the third frame, but it wasn’t enough. Cormier took him down again and slapped on a rear-naked choke. Johnson was forced to tap at the 2:39 mark.
With the TKO win, Cormier captured the UFC light heavyweight title that was stripped from Jon Jones last month.
Cormier then sent a stern message to Jones, who was undoubtedly watching the scrap from home.
UFC 187 took place inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
