The last time Daniel Cormier (pictured) stepped into the cage, Jon Jones embarrassed him to the point Cormier was left drowning in his own tears. On Saturday at UFC 187, Cormier left the cage with the light heavyweight belt wrapped around his waist.
After rallying to post a third round TKO victory over Anthony Johnson to capture the vacant title, Cormier snatched the mic from UFC color commentator Joe Rogan and sent a stern message to his bitter rival, who was undoubtedly watching the scrap from the comforts of his couch.
“Joe Rogan, no disrespect to you or the 16,000 people in this arena, but I have a message for one man – Jon Jones, get your s**t together. I’m waiting for you!” Cormier yelled before storming out of the octagon.
Jones has dominated the division since winning the title in March 2011, which he parlayed into becoming the most decorated light heavyweight champion in UFC history, but was stripped of his hardware last month after getting arrested for felony hit-and-run where a pregnant motorist suffered a broken arm. The troubled 27-year-old was also temporarily suspended by the UFC to get his life together.
It is unknown when Jones will return to action, but UFC president Dana White said this past week that he will get an immediate crack to reclaim his throne when he does come back.
Depending upon how long it takes for Jones to sort out his legal troubles and clean up his personal life, Cormier may have to defend his freshly-minted belt against another opponent before rematching Jones, the man who dominated him merely four months ago.
