It was a lightweight shootout that’s been years in the making. Many moons ago, pundits debated whether Eddie Alvarez (pictured) or Gilbert Melendez was the best 155-pounder not competing in the UFC.
On Saturday at UFC 188, perhaps several years too late, it was determined Alvarez was the better fighter – at least on this night.
After dropping the opening round, Alvarez rallied to take the final two stanzas – at least on two of the three judges’ scorecards. Alvarez took a split decision victory (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).
They were bitter rivals entering the cage, but left with a tremendous amount of respect for the other’s abilities.
Alvarez, the former Bellator champion, has now won half of his two fights under the UFC’s watch. Melendez, on the other hand, has dropped three of four in the UFC since leaving the Strikeforce title in his rear-view mirror.
UFC 188 took place inside Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico.
