Former UFC strawweight champion Carla Esparza (pictured) will be riding the pine for six to eight months for shoulder surgery.
“I will be undergoing surgery as a result of a shoulder injury from my last fight. I will be out 6-8 months,” Esparza posted on her verified Twitter account. “I’ll be back in no time.
“I’m really sad, but this will by no means bring me down. I will be back.”
FoxSports.com, who first reported the injury, spoke with Esparza’s manager who revealed the injury initially occurred during March’s title loss to Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 185. Esparza believed a little TLC was all the wound needed, but doctors eventually determined that going under the knife was the best solution.
Esparza is currently on a previously planned vacation and will have surgery upon her return to the United States.
Esparza is presently ranked as the UFC’s top strawweight, despite getting destroyed by Jedrzejczyk.
