To the surprise of nobody, John Dodson (pictured) is the UFC flyweight top contender. It was announced on this week’s edition of “UFC Tonight” that Dodson gets next crack at champion Demetrious Johnson sometime later this year.

Dodson is currently slotted first in the UFC flyweight rankings. He solidified his next dibs status with May’s unanimous decision victory over Zach Makovsky. It was Dodson’s third straight win.

Johnson is arguably the most complete fighter in all of MMA. He’s certainly one of the most under-appreciated. Johnson has rattled off eight consecutive wins, with the last six being of the title defense variety.

“Mighty Mouse” holds a decision win over Dodson from January 2013. It was Johnson’s first title defense. Due to various injuries, Dodson has only fought three times since their initial encounter while Johnson has performed on five occasions.

Most, with Dodson spearheading the charge, believe Dodson has what it takes to dethrone the only 125-pound champ the UFC has ever known.

We shall see…
