‘UFC 189: Mendes vs. McGregor’ Live Results and Play-by-Play

“UFC 189: Mendes vs. McGregor” took place Saturday inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. 

The moment we’ve all been waiting for finally arrived. Conor McGregor battled Chad Mendes for the vacant interim featherweight title in tonight’s featured attraction. Welterweight champ Robbie Lawler defended his throne against Rory MacDonald in the co-main event.

Here are the official results and play-by-play for the main card from tonight’s action:

1stRound: Not much action in the opening minutes, as they’re feeling each other out. Pickett gets a flash knockdown with a vicious right hook. He goes in for the kill. Almeida gets to his feet, but is clearly still dazed and confused. Pickett takes his legs out from under him with a big leg kick. Pickett follows him to the mat and almost gets caught in a leg lock. They’re back standing again. Picket drops him again with a knee to the face. Almeida drops Pickett with a right. They’re back up. Almeida has blood all mover his face. They are trading thunder in the pocket, both landing equally. Nice uppercut by Almeida. Picket counters with a one-two combo. Close round, but judges might give it to Pickett since Almeida is dripping in blood.

5thRound scores it: Pickett, 10-9.

2ndRound: Almeida uses a jab to unleash a flying knee that floors Pickett. Walk-off KO victory for the Brazilian.

1stRound: Nelson drops him with a left-right combo and jumps on top. He quickly moves to side control. They’re tussling in the center of hte cage. Nelson easily jumps in full mount. Thatch gives up his back and Nelson slaps on a body triangle. Nelson locks in a rear-naked choke. Thatch is forced to cry uncle.

Jeremy Stephens Defeats Dennis Bermudez via TKO  (knee) at :42 in the 3rdround

1stRound: Stephens drops him briefly with a right hook. They’re back up. Bermudez promptly responds with a solid straight right. Bermudez has him clinched against the cage. He plants Stephens on his back. Bermudez jumps on his back and is bringing the pain. Stephens gets back up. Bermudez is clinching him again.

5htRound scores it: Bermudez, 10-9.

2ndRound: Stephens drops him with a right hook, Bermudez bounces right back up. This is a violent back-and-forth battle. Stephens floors him again. Bermudez rallies and kicks Stephens to the canvas with a front kick. Bermudez is grinding him against the cage. They are trading thunder. Bermudez did enough damage to win the round, but he was dropped twice.

5thRound scores it: Stephens, 10-9.

3rdRound: Stephens clocks him with a jumping knee to the grill and gives him the business on the mat. After several thunderous punches, the assault is brought to an end.

Robbie Lawler Defeats Rory MacDonald via TKO (punches) at 1:00 in the 5thRound (Lawyer retains UFC welterweight title)

1stRound: “Big” John McCarthy is the third man inside the cage. MacDonald starts things off with a straight right. Not much action thus far, both knowing it’s a five round affair. MacDonald tags him with a one-two combo. Lawler counters with a right. Tight round because nobody really did anything.

5thRound scores it: MacDonald, 10-9.

2ndRound: Lawler eats a left jab. And another. MacDonald tags him with a head kick. Straight right by MacDonald. Lawler scores with a one-two combo. And another. Lawler is starting to find his groove. Lawler looks very sharp right now. MacDonald’s face is getting bloodied up.

5thRound scores it: Lawler, 10-9.

3rdround:Lawler picks up right here he left on in the stand up game. MacDonald finally scores with a right. MacDonald finally tries to take it to the ground and Lawler sprawls perfectly. He makes MacDonald pay for it. MacDonald’s face is busted up. At this pace, it might go the distance. MacDonald stuns him with a head kick and pounces. Lawler is in serious trouble but just needs to survive the last 20 seconds.

5thRound scores it: MacDonald, 10-9.

4thRound: Lawler appears to be still out on his feel and MacDonald smells blood. He’s on the attack. MacDonald continues to unleash head kicks. Now he’s dropping standing elbows. Lawler is in trouble. Another head kick by MacDonald. It seems like only a matter of time before Lawler falls. MacDonald looks crisp. One head kick changed the complexion of the entire fight. And another head kick by MacDonald. Lawler finally responds witha right hand. Lawler fires off a combo. Lawler appears to have finally recovered.

5thRound scores it: MacDonald, 10-9.

5thRound: Lawler drops him with a left. He pounces and drops some thunder. It’s a wrap.

Conor McGregor Defeats Chad Mendes via TKO (punches) at 4:57 in the 2ndRound (McGregor captures interim featherweight title)

1stRound: Herb Dean is the third man inside the cage. McGregor rushes him and gets taken down for a brief moment. McGregor is unleashing fancy kicks to keep Mendes off balance. McGregor looks very confident. Mendes is eating some big shots. Mendes hasn’t shot on him yet. He tags McGregor with a one-two combo. McGregor controlling the pace. Mendes finally shoots and slams the Irishman to the mat. Mendes nails him with a big elbow. McGregor gets to his feet, but eats two big shots on the way up. Mendes nails him with another right. McGregor’s right eye is bloodied. McGregor keeping him at bay with his kicks. Mendes scores another easy takedown and has one minute to work. Mendes is in his half-guard. He’s active with his ground-and-pound. McGregor’s right eye is messed up.

5thRound scores it: Mendes, 10-9.

2ndRound: McGregor comes out as confident as ever. He throws a kick and gets planted on his back in the center of the cage. The crowd is booing, but it’s not Mendes’ fault McGregor can’t stop the takedown. Mendes is doing just enough to prevent this from getting stood up. McGregor landing elbows from the ground. Referee Herb Dean continues to warn Mendes about something. Mendes is handing it to McGregor. McGregor still chatting away from his back. McGregor asking Dean to stand it up, but is told Mendes is doing work. Mendes goes for a sloppy guillotine and McGregor gets up. McGregor is making him pay now. Mendes looks gassed. McGregor drops him with a barrage of punches and continues to bring the pain. Dean calls it.
