See, Daniel Cormier (pictured) ain’t ducking nobody. As the freshly-minted UFC light heavyweight champion previously stated, he just needed some R&R before returning to action – hopefully coming back in time to headline UFC 192 in Houston.
During Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 72 event, it was announced Cormier will in fact make his first title defense against Alexander Gustafsson in the October 3 event.
Toyota Center in Houston, Texas hosts the festivities.
Gustafsson solidified his top contender status by – um, getting viciously TKO’d by Anthony Johnson in January. Yeah, who knows…
Nonetheless, Gustafsson has won seven of his past nine fights and is currently ranked second in the division.
Cormier captured the vacant light heavyweight crown by beating Johnson in May at UFC 187. Cormier is victorious in all but one of his 17 professional fights.
Cormier’s lone blemish came against Jon Jones. Remember him, the (troubled) most decorated light heavyweight champ in UFC history?
Here is the card’s current lineup:
Rashad Evans vs. Ryan Bader
Alexander Gustafsson vs. Daniel Cormier (UFC light heavyweight champion)
