As expected, Strikeforce has confirmed that a middleweight slugfest between Robbie Lawler and Melvin Manhoef will indeed go down inside BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. The organization also verified that “Strikeforce: Miami” will host the highly-rumored welterweight fight between Jay Hieron and Joe Riggs.
Lawler was last seen getting submitted by current Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields in the 1stRound of their scrap this past June. Prior to the loss, Lawler had been perfect through his previous six fights, posting W’s over the likes of Joey Villasenor, Frank Trigg, Murilo “Ninja” Rua and Scott Smith en route to capturing the EliteXC 185-pound crown.
Manhoef is fresh off the biggest win of his exciting career. The lethal striker slapped Kazuo Misaki silly last week at the “Dynamite!! 2009″ card in Japan. Because most of Manhoef’s damage has been done overseas, most don’t know that 23 of his 24 victories have come by way of TKO or knockout.
Because former NFL great Herschel Walker and TNA superstar Bobby Lashley are expected to participate in the event, the bout between Hieron and Riggs will not be televised unless time permits.
However, there’s only 24 days until gametime and neither fighter has been assigned an opponent. That being said, it’s possible one of those two might get pushed back and Hieron/Riggs could be promoted to the televised portion of the Showtime broadcast.
Here are the other fighters rumored to be participating in the January 30th event:
David Gomez vs. Craig Oxley
Sabah Homasi vs. John Kelly
Pablo Alfonso vs. Marcos da Matta
Jay Hieron vs. Joe Riggs
Bobby Lashley vs. TBD
Herschel Walker vs. TBD
Melvin Manhoef vs. Robbie Lawler
Marloes Coenen vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (Strikeforce Women’s Champion)
Nick Diaz vs. Marius Zaromskis (Open Welterweight Title)
