‘UFC 192: Cormier vs. Gustafsson’ Live Results And Play-By-Play

“UFC 192: Cormier vs. Gustafsson” went down Saturday night inside Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. 

Light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier defended his crown for the first time when he met Alexander Gustafsson in the show’s featured contest. Fellow 205-pounders Rashad Evans and Ryan Bader battled in the co-main event.

A pivotal welterweight affair between former champ Johny Hendricks and Tyron Woodley was supposed to get second billing, but Hendricks suffered complications from his weight cut and the scrap was pulled. Woodley was subsequently gifted next crack at the UFC welterweight title for his troubles.

Here are the official results and play-by-play for the MAIN CARD from tonight’s fights:

Preliminary Card:

Julianna Pena Defeats Jessica Eye via Unanimous Decision (29-27, 29-27, 29-27)

1stRound: They both charge the center of the cage and come out swinging. Eye gets a body lock and Pena pulls guard. They’re back to their feet. Pena has her pressed against the cage. Pena reverses. Pena rips her to the mat. Eye eats a few big shots to the dome. She eats a knee to the midsection on the way up. Eye now has her opponent clinched against the fence. Pena gets another takedown and lands in side-control. Not much offense by Pena in top position.

5thRound scores it: Pena, 10-9.

2ndRound: Eye immediately clinches her against the cage. They separate and Eye gets a takedown. Eye moves to side-control. She quickly takes her back. Now Eye transitions to an arm-triangle choke from half-guard. Eye released the lock and is still in half-guard. Eye rolls to her back and goes for an armbar. She knees Pena in the head and the ref steps in to stop the action for the illegal blow. They are stood up and Eye is deducted a point for the infraction. That was a questionable point deduction with only a few seconds left in the round. They also should have restarted the fight on the ground, not standing up.

5thRound scores it: Eye won the round, but it’s even after the deduction, 9-9.

3rdRound: Pena secures a takedown in the center of the ring within seconds. Pena moves to the back and attempts a rear-naked choke. Eye escapes but is still on her back. Pena slaps on a one-arm guillotine to end the fight. Eye is riding out the lock until the horn blares.

5thRound scores it: Pena, 10-9, and likely won 29-27.

– Pena called out Rousey in her post-fight speech. “Dana called you Mike Tyson. Well, then I’m Holyfield. I’ll be your Huckleberry.”

Joseph Benavidez Defeats Ali Bagautinov via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

1stRound: Bagautinov takes the center of the ring. Overhand right hand by Benavidez. Not much landing for either fighter right now. Bagautinov’s right eye is starting to swell. Benavidez misses with two head kicks. He’s also unable to get a takedown. Benavidez has a cut over his left eye, not sure when that happened. Close round because neither landed anything significant.

5thRound scores it: Benavidez, 10-9.

2ndRound: Benavidez lands a straight left. Bagautinov eats a kick to the body. Benavidez starting to unleash a lot of kicks to keep his opponent off balance. Bagautinov tags him with a left hook. Nothing spectacular going on here. Flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson sitting in the front row and he’s probably not shaking in his boots. Crowd getting anxious. Bagautinov catches a kick and slams Benavidez to the mat. Who knows who won this round.

5thRound scores it: Benavidez, 10-9.

3rdRound: Benavidez still working kicks. Slow moving fight for a flyweight contest. Crowd really letting them have it now. Three minutes to go and it seems like Benavidez is content with riding out a decision win, though far from impressive. Benavidez connects with a knee to the face in the clinch. Benavidez has shown much better footwork throught. Bagautinov gets a brief takedown and now has him clinched against the cage. Benavidez should win, but these rounds have been close and we all know how MMA judges are.

5thRound scores it: Benavidez, 10-9, and should run the table 30-27.

Ruslan Magomedov Defeats Shawn Jordan via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)

1stRound: Jordan takes the center of the cage. He has Magomedov clinched against the fence. Jordan landing short knees to the thighs. Jordan drags him to the ground. Magomedov uses a kimura to fight his way to his feet. They’re standing and separated. Magomedov lands a head kick and follows up with a one-two combo. Jordan eats a body kick. Jordan misses with a bomb and eats another two-punch combo.

5thRound scores it: Jordan, 10-9.

2ndRound: Jordan is on the offensive early. He lands a body kick and is unloading bombs. He has Magomedov clinched against the fence. Magomedov reverses position. They separate. Jordan gets a body lock and is going for a takedown. Magomedov fending him off very well. Magomedov lands a kick to the face that appears to have scraped Jordan’s left eye. Crowd is not happy with the inactivity. Jordan clinches him against the cage. Magomedov reverses.

5thRound scores it: Magomedov, 10-9.

3rdRound: Jordan comes out with a great sense of urgency. He goes for a takedown to no avail. Magomedov is sensing blood. Jordan is cut over both eyes. Magomedov lands a head kick. Jordan’s face is busted up. He eats a front kick to the body. Well, the last two fights have sucked all the life out of the arena.

5thRound scores it: Magomedov, 10-9, and likely won, 29-28.

Ryan Bader Defeats Rashad Evans via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

1stRound: Evans takes the center of the cage. Bader looks very comfortable with keeping this standing. Two minutes in an neither have landed or gone for anything significant. Bader misses on a takedown attempt. Bader tags him with a left jab. And another. Evans has been out for a while, and it appears like he’s looking to find rhythm. Crowd s once again not happy. Evans lands a one-two combo and tries to clinch him against the fence. Bader lands an elbow to the face as they separate. Evans looking for a home run with that overhand right.

5thRound scores it: Bader, 10-9.

2ndRound: Bader nails him with a right hand and follows up with a left. Evans has good movement but isn’t landing much. Bader tags him with a side kick to the body. Bader lands a highly telegraphed takedown. Evans gets up but Bader is draped all over his back and drags him back down. Evans is on the attack. He tags Bader with a right. Evans connects with a leg kick. And follows up with a punch to the body. Evans unloads a bomb to the face. Evans ails on a double leg.

5thRound scores it: Bader, 10-9.

3rdRound: Evans likely needs a finish here. Evans has been in the center of the cage for much of the fight but Bader has avoided most damage. Evans has him clinched against the cage. Bader lands an elbow as they separate. Bader tags him with a body kick. Evans lands a right and surges for a takedown. Bader nails him again with an elbow on the separation.

5thRoun scores it: Bader, 10-9, and should sweep the cards, 30-27.

Daniel Cormier Defeats Alexander Gustafsson via Split Decision (47-48,48-47, 49-46) (Cormier retains UFC light heavyweight title)

1stRound: Herb Dean is the third man inside the cage. Cormier is making Gustafsson circle the outside of the cage. Cormier closes in and slams him to the mat. That was some ragdoll stuff right there. Cormier working some ground-and-pound in the half, now full-guard. Gustafsson tries to get up to no avail. Gustafsson is doing a good job of avoiding damage, but he needs to get up. Cormier working body shots on the ground. Gustafsson finally gets to his feet with a minute left. Cormier looks very confident on his feet. Not a worry in the world.

5thRound scores it: Cormier, 10-9.

2ndRound: Gustafsson comes out aggressive. He lands a one-two combo and surprisingly scores a brief takedown. Cormier is bleeding from around his right eye. Gustafsson lands a knee to the midsection. Cormier lands several uppercuts in the clinch. Gustafsson wasn’t even trying to get out of there for some reason. Gustafsson tags him with a straight right. Cormier scores with an overhand right. Cormier has kept his promise and is bringing the fight to the Swede. Cormier continues to score in the clinch. Gustafsson gets another takedown. Cormier gets to his feet, but Gustafsson is draped on his back.

5thRound scores it, Gustafsson, 10-9.

3rdRound: Cormier charges the center of the cage, but Gustafsson connects with a one-two combo. He follows up with a knee to the face. Gustafsson nails him with a right uppercut. Cormier answers with a right hand. Gustafsson’s nose is now bleeding. Gustafsson counters with a combo. Cormier is clocking him with several unanswered uppercuts in the clinch. If Gustafsson can keep the fight like this, he has a shot at stealing the crown. More vicious uppercuts in the clinch by Cormier. Gustafsson’s face is busted up. It’s as though Gustafsson isn’t worried about these clinch uppercuts – he should be. Gustafsson drops him with a knee to the grill and pounces. Cormier fights to his feet. Only 25 seconds left in the round. Great fight. Cormier was winning the round, but there’s no way you can’t give it to Gustafsson after dropping the champ.

5thRound scores it: Gustafsson, 10-9.

4thRound: Gustafsson is looking very confident. He’s working his long left jab now. Cormier eats a kick to the midsection but continues to charge forward. Cormier keeps bringing the heat and nails Gus in the face as he’s running away. Gustafsson connects with two unanswered rights. Gustafsson shoots for a takedown and eats a knee to the face. Cormier hasn’t attempted a takedown since the first round. Gustafsson catches a kick and trips him to the ground. Close round.

5thRound scores it: Cormier, 10-9.

5thRound: Gustafsson has been in a close title fight before entering the last round and it didn’t end too well for him against Jon Jones. Cormier connects with a right hook. And another. Gustafsson counters with a left. Cormier continues to walk him down. Right hook by Cormier. Gustafsson can’t complete a takedown. Another close round, but it looks like Cormier might take it with two minutes to go. Cormier is winning this clinch battle.

5thRound scores it: Cormier,10-9, and should retain his title, 48-47.
