Ain’t nothin’ like a little locker room drama before a big title fight, eh? Exactly one month before reigning UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey defends her throne against Holly Holm at UFC 193, Rousey’s mom, AnnMaria De Mars, decided to publicly lambaste her coach, Edmond Tarverdyan.
Anyone within the MMA circle knows that De Mars has never been one to bite her tongue, and she absolutely let loose with LatiNation about Tarverdyan’s “terrible” coaching skills. Oh, and De Mars also claims he’s a “bad person” to boot.
“I think Edmond is a terrible coach, and I will say it publicly,” De Mars emphatically stated. “I think he’s a terrible coach. I think he hit the lottery when Ronda walked in there (Glendale Fighting Club). She was winning before she ever met him.
“She probably won 99 percent of the judo matches she ever fought in. She’d won the Junior Worlds when she was 17. She got a bronze medal in the Olympics. She got a silver medal in the World Championships. She was one of the top athletes in the world when she walked in there, and he wouldn’t even give her the time of day for months. Somebody like that is a terrible coach.”
As the story goes, which Tarverdyan has confirmed on multiple occasions, Rousey was desperately trying to get him to train her as she started her MMA career. While Tarverdyan basically ignored her for the better part of four months, he finally started to give her a few pointers here and there. Then, boom. Ronda Rousey became RONDA ROUSEY and Tarverdyan has been stuck to the “Rowdy” one ever since.
Rousey owns an unblemished 12-0 professional record en route to becoming the most dominant fighter in the game, and because of that, De Mars believes that’s why her daughter refuses to cut her lucky charm loose.
“I think she stays there because it’s like somebody pitches a no-hitter when they’re wearing red underwear, and they wear that red underwear for every day – and I think it’s superstition, and I would caution anybody from going there,” De Mars said. “And I think it’s bad he uses her to lure people in. And the reason I tell everybody, and I told Ronda, ‘I’m not going to be quiet about this anymore’ – he’s a bad person, and people should not go there. And if he wants to sue me, that’s my honest opinion.”
No word if De Mars had made her feelings clear directly to Tarverdyan in the past, but he certainly knows how she feels now.
Regardless, Rousey’s mom has put her in a tough spot by going public. The two people Rousey respects the most and have had the most influence on her MMA game are not only on separate pages, but they are reading completely different books.
It’s not the ideal atmosphere for Rousey as her training camp for Holm kicks into high gear. Can you just imagine what it’s going to be like the next time De Mars strolls into GFC to watch her daughter train? I would imagine you’ll hear a screeching record and everyone comes to a complete stop.
