There will be some pretty on pretty crime going down at UFC Fight Night 80. On Wednesday, it was announced Rose Namajunas (pictured) will replace Joanne Calderwood and headline the December 10 against Paige VanZant.
The strawweights represent two of the UFC’s brightest youngsters. Namajunas is looking to build off this month’s submission victory over Angela Hill.
“Thug” owns a mundane 3-2 professional record, but at just 23 is considered by many as a big up-and-comer. So much so that UFC president Dana White dubbed her “the next Ronda Rousey” when she was a finalist on “The Ultimate Fighter 20.”
VanZant, meanwhile, is one of the UFC’s most marketable athletes at 21. She has already secured an individual sponsorship with Reebok. Inside the cage, she has rattled off five consecutive wins.
“12 Gauge” most recently submitted Alex Chambers in September.
No reason was given for Calderwood’s exit, but an injury would be the most logical answer.
Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada hosts the festivities. UFC Fight Pass streams the entire event live.
