UFC Ronda Rousey

Holly Holm had two chances to beat Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 – slim and none. Holm promptly threw none out the window and turned slim into certainty thanks to Rousey’s ego.

Rousey’s game plan should have been easy peasy against Holm: bull rush the lanky boxer, slap on a body lock, slam her to the canvas, take an arm home as a souvenir.

That sequence should have taken no longer than 64 seconds, the total combined time Rousey took to dispose of her past three victims. That’s why Rousey was a whopping 20-1 odds-on favorite against Holm.

Instead, the “World’s Most Dominant Athlete” wanted to prove to the planet that her standup is no longer her weak link. What better way to showcase her refined hands than by outboxing the boxer?

Unfortunately for Rousey, that played right into Holm’s wheelhouse. Rousey allowed Holm to do what she does best, box, which was the only chance she had at dethroning the UFC’s golden girl.

Holm picked her apart from the outside, busting up Rousey’s cover girl face by the end of the opening round. It was just the second time Rousey had been taken beyond the opening period in 13 professional fights.

Rousey should have known at that point her dubious strategy was not working and immediately divert back to her bread and butter (Please see: Easy peasy game plan). Instead, it was much of the same in the second stanza, much to Holm’s delight.

Holm made Rousey pay for not adjusting her attack just 59 seconds into the second frame, wobbling her with a left hand before unleashing a highlight reel head kick that rendered Rousey unconscious on the canvas.

And just like that, Rousey’s once-untouchable UFC title belt disappeared nearly as quickly as her aura of invincibility.

Rousey was sent to the hospital after the devastating KO loss, where she received some stitches to sew up her lacerated lip, which will make this defeat even tougher to swallow.

If Rousey was being likened to Mike Tyson entering the bout, then Holm is now her Buster Douglas.

Tyson was never the same fighter after getting upset by Douglas. Let’s see if Rousey’s ego will allow her to get back to her dominant ways.
