EliteXC was hoping to end their MMA year with a bang. The struggling promotion has their sights on holding three title bouts on their November 8th show in Reno, Nevada. Although they do have two title fights confirmed, they are still unable to secure an opponent to take on Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante to become the first ever EliteXC light heavyweight champion. Initially Cyrille Diabate was rumored to be challenging Cavalcante, EliteXC’s top 205-pounder, however he has declined the fight due to insufficient time to prepare.
“Cyrille Diabate is not going to fight (Rafael) ‘Feijao’ for the title,” EliteXC head of fight operations Jeremy Lappen recently told MMAJunkie.com. “We offered him the fight, but he felt like he didn’t have enough time to get ready.
“We’re still looking for an opponent for ‘Feijao.'”
Lappen went on to state that Diabate is more than interested in fighting Cavalcante, however feels that fighting an opponent of that caliber deserves a full 6-8 week training period. Lappen stated that a future fight against Cavalcante is definitely a possibility.
For now, EliteXC is still planning on having Cavalcante on their final card of the year, however it us uncertain whether he will be fighting for the open title or not.
