When UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre went to this past Saturday’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training session, he wasn’t expecting anything more than a few hours of intense grappling and ground work. Unfazed by the larger than usual crowd in attendance, St-Pierre was awarded his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt by his longtime teacher Bruno Fernandes, who is a Gracie Barra black belt himself.
“This was the high point in my career,” an emotional St-Pierre told Graciemag.com. “When I received my black belt in karate, when I conquered the UFC belt, and today.”
St-Pierre had studied BJJ under the tutelage of Renzo Gracie for many years, however after St-Pierre had a war of words with Renzo student Matt Serra after Serra upset St-Pierre for his title in 2007, St-Pierre was forced to look elsewhere to perfect his BJJ game. Although GSP hasn’t trained with Renzo for quite some time, his former teacher said that the promotion was well deserved.
“He more than deserves it. This was excellent news for the fight world,” said Renzo.
St-Pierre is getting his promotion just in the nick of time, as he will be defending his title against BJ Penn, perhaps the most crafty Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter in all of MMA, at UFC 94 on January 31st.
