Well, that didn’t take long. Less than 24 hours after leaving the UFC in his rear-view mirror in favor of Bellator MMA, Benson Henderson (pictured) has been assigned his first opponent.
On Tuesday, Bellator announced Henderson will challenge Bellator welterweight champion Andrey Koreshkov for his crown April 22. “Bellator 153: Koreshkov vs. Henderson” goes down inside the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
This marks Koreshkov’s first outing since taking the title from Douglas Lima in July. “Spartan” will be riding a five-fight winning streak into the toughest test of his career.
Henderson, a former WEC and UFC lightweight champion, signed with Bellator as a free agent yesterday. The 32-year-old is victorious in four of his past six outings, including two straight.
“Smooth” revealed that Bellator offered him a deal he couldn’t refuse, and that being able to secure his own sponsors inside the cage, as opposed to the UFC’s Reebok-only policy, also played a major factor in his decision to bounce.
No other bouts have been announced for the lineup at this time.
Spike TV will broadcast the main card at 9PM ET/PT.
