Sage Northcutt (pictured), the UFC’s golden boy, was thoroughly exposed five days ago in a submission loss to Bryan Barberena. UFC president Dana White had the chance to save “Super” from himself before the fight, but opted not to.
After the loss, Northcutt revealed he entered the octagon with severe strep throat and was issued antibiotics just so he could compete. White knew the seriousness of the illness, but chose to do nothing about it.
After watching the Northcutt hype train get derailed, White is now attempting to do some damage control by taking the heat for Northcutt’s lackluster performance.
“This was my bad. This was his throat on Thursday (as White whips out a picture of Northcutt’s throat on his iPhone), and the kid really wanted to fight and I let him fight and he was sick as hell. I blew it,” White told Big Boy TV. “The kid was super sick and he still wanted to fight. His father said, ‘Listen, we still want to take the fight. We still want to take the fight.’
“I should have pulled the kid from the fight. He’s 19 years old, he fought three times in three months. I should have pulled the kid.”
Unfortunately for Northcutt, the damage has been done as several of his MMA peers piled on after he tapped out to an arm triangle choke while Barberena was in his HALF-GUARD. The good news for Northcutt is that he’s got time on his side as he’s still two years shy of legal drinking age, and more importantly, his boss clearly has his back.
Barberena, who took the fight on just eight days’ notice, said he felt disrespected after Northcutt pulled the strep throat “excuse” card. I wonder how Barberena feels now.
