There wasn’t much buzz entering Saturday’s UFC card after heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez fell out of the main event with respective injuries. Good thing Stephen Thompson (pictured) came along to steal the show.
Former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks was more than a 2-1 odds-on favorite to beat “Wonderboy” in the show’s featured attraction, but Thompson had other plans. The lanky striker unleashed a diversified attack on Hendricks to collect his sixth straight victory, the longest active streak in the UFC 170-pound division.
A lot of focus before the fight centered around Hendricks’ “fantastic” weight cut. Perhaps equal attention should have been paid towards defending Thompson’s unorthodox assault.
The end came after Thompson landed a left hand that sent Hendricks to his knees. Several rights later and it was a wrap.
UFC Fight Night 82 took place inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
