Strikeforce announced that they will be airing their “Destruction” event on November 21st free on HDNet. This cable broadcast is part of the deal that Strikeforce signed with the all-high-definition network earlier this year. The event will be headlined by a light heavyweight title showdown between champion Bobby Southworth taking on Renato “Babalu” Sobral. Also, lightweight champ Josh Thomson will be defending his title for the first time against an opponent yet to be named. Strikeforce also stated that a deal is in the works with NBC to expand upon their current partnership and air some live fights in early 2009.
MMAJunkie.com was the first to report Strikeforce’s intentions with NBC, and that their first live fight broadcast with the network could take place in the first quarter of the new year.
“It’s been signed off on at many levels (at NBC) already, and I think we’re at the final stages,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told MMAjunkie.com. “By the first quarter of ’09, we’ll probably have some fights going on. We would need that time frame any way to book the right fights and do it properly.”
NBC already holds a late-night weekly show that airs re-runs of previous Strikeforce bouts, however being able to air live MMA fights would take the San Jose, California based company to new heights.
As far as “Destruction,” MMAJunkie also reported that they are in talks with either having crafty MMA veteran Caol Uno or former IFL champion Chris Horodecki take on Thomson for his title.
Here are the fighters Rumored to be competing at the HP Pavilion on the “Destruction” event:
Joe Riggs vs. Luke Stewart
Josh Thomson (Strikeforce Lightweight Champion) vs. TBD
Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs. Bobby Southworth (Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion)
