The largest MMA organization in the world, the UFC, has reached a two-year television deal with WOWOW to televise their Pay-Per-View events in Japan. Returning to Japan is extremely significant for the UFC because Japan holds the largest threats to the UFC’s MMA dominance across the world. Popular Japanese promotions World Victory Road and Dream have been able to appease the MMA loving fans of the Orient, however with the UFC now available, it provides the promotion great exposure to this key market.
“The Japanese market has always been important to the UFC, and we want to bring MMA and all of its biggest stars back to Japan,” said Dana White, UFC President. “We are thrilled to be back with WOWOW.”
The two will be wasting no time, as they will begin their partnership with this weekend’s UFC 89 event, which will be held in Birmingham, England. None of the UFC events will air live, however the Japanese fans will only be subject to a minor delay, one that will make it more convenient for the majority of fans to order the cards.
“WOWOW is extremely pleased to announce that UFC is back on WOWOW, starting with the UFC 89 event in Birmingham, UK,” said Mr. Kazuyuki Omura, Chief Producer, WOWOW. “The UFC will telecast in High Definition on WOWOW’s popular ‘Timely-on-Air’ format, a limited delay broadcast adjusting the airtime to a time that will be convenient for the sports fans in Japan. After airing over 50 UFC shows from 2001 to 2007, we are excited to once again provide our subscribers with the most prominent mixed martial arts program in the world.”
