Looks like the UFC thinks the Jersey Shore is the perfect spot to showcase their welterweight talent as Martin Kampmann will meet Ben Saunders at UFC 111 on March 27th.
Although bout agreements have not been signed, MMAWeekly.com has confirmed with sources close to the situation that both sluggers have agreed to the scrap.
Kampmann has won three of his last four fights and stakes claim to an impressive 16-3 mark overall. He bounced back nicely from his UFC 103 TKO loss to Paul Daley by submitting Jacob Volkmann in the 1stRound of their UFC 108 contest.
Saunders is no slouch himself as he owns a respectable 8-1-2 record. The American Top Team-trained fighter thrashed the gritty Marcus Davis with a barrage of knee strikes to earn a devastating TKO victory at UFC 106 this past November.
In addition to the welterweight contest, which is slated for the televised portion of the pay-per-view broadcast, the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey will also play host to Thiago Alves’ 170-pound rematch against Jon Fitch.
Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will defend his strap against the heavy-handed Dan Hardy in the evening’s main event. It will mark GSP’s first title defense since dominating the aforementioned Alves in a unanimous decision at UFC 100 last April.
Sounds like it’s gonna be a fist-pumpin’ good time in Jersey. Here are the fighters rumored to participate in the show:
Kurt Pellegrino vs. TBD
Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Brown
Mark Bocek vs. Jim Miller
Martin Kampmann vs. Ben Saunders
Kenny Florian vs. Takanori Gomi
Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch
Shane Carwin vs. Frank Mir (UFC Interim Heavyweight Title)
Dan Hardy vs. Georges St-Pierre (UFC Welterweight Champion)
