Come on, Rafael dos Anjos, but rub some dirt on it. It’ll be OK. The UFC lightweight champion broke fans’ hearts when it was revealed Tuesday that a broken left foot would force him out of his highly anticipated shootout against Conor McGregor at UFC 196.
To prove that he is in fact injured, dos Anjos posted a picture of his fractured foot and apologized for pulling out of the biggest payday – I mean, fight – of his career.
“Sorry to all my real fans and @ufc,I never cancel any fight due to injury but accidents happen #Jesus #truechampion,” dos Anjos tweeted with the above pic.
It was reported dos Anjos broke his foot while sparring last Friday at Kings MMA. It is assumed he took the picture right after the injury since his foot should be in a cast by now.
No word on how long dos Anjos will be forced to sit the sidelines.
As far as McGregor’s fate, it is believed the UFC will keep him in the March 5 event against another opponent. McGregor’s new nemesis is expected to be a big-name lightweight, former champion Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone and Nate Diaz are the early front runners to land the money fight, but the significance won’t be as big as if dos Anjos would have been able to stay healthy.
McGregor unified the UFC featherweight belt in December by knocking out Jose Aldo and was looking to become the first UFC athlete to simultaneously hold two different titles.
UFC 196 goes down inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. McGregor’s new opponent is expected to be named shortly.
