As expected, there will be some teammate on teammate crime going down on May 2. On Friday, it was confirmed that a heavyweight tango between JacksonWink MMA teammates Alistair Overeem (pictured) Andrei Arlovski will headline UFC Fight Night 87.
Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands serves as host. Fox Sports 1 will broadcast the main card live in America.
This is somewhat of an odd pairing, not only because of the teammate factor, but because Overeem is enjoying a late career resurgence having won three straight, while Arlovski is looking to bounce back from January’s first round knockout loss to Stipe Miocic. Although, “The Pit Bull” had rattled off four consecutive wins prior to meeting Miocic’s fists.
Overeem entered free agency following December’s TKO victory over former champion Junior dos Santos. After some debate, “The Demolition Man” inked a multi-fight contract extension to remain with the UFC earlier this month. The 35-year-old is hoping a crack at the heavyweight crown will be waiting for him with an impressive finish over Arlovski.
This is a critical contest at a critical stage in Arlovski’s career. After finding his groove again, it will be up to Arlovski to prove he’s more than just a big name in this MMA game.
