There’s no way Nate Diaz (pictured), who accepted a fight against THE Conor McGregor on just 11 days’ notice, finished the UFC’s cash cow at UFC 196, right? Right?!
Wrong! Diaz made the 209 proud on Saturday night.
Despite McGregor’s 5.5-1 odds-on favorite status, Diaz was making a fight of it in the opening round. He did his best to use his right jab to keep McGregor at bay. Although Diaz likely lost the opening frame, Diaz showed the flashy Irishman that he wasn’t backing down.
McGregor started to open up the arsenal in the second period. He was picking Diaz apart with his speed and strength advantage. Diaz’s bloodied right eye was proof of that.
For those watching the fight, you got a sense that it would only be a matter of time before McGregor catches him with his trademark left and finished things. Diaz appeared hurt, but turned the tables by catching McGregor with some combinations.
Diaz wobbled McGregor with a barrage of punches, and though McGregor started to return fire when it appeared he was out on his feet, for some ridiculous reason McGregor went to take the Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt down.
Oh naw he didn’t…
Diaz quickly tried to catch McGregor in a guillotine choke on the way down. When he realized that wasn’t the best option, Diaz promptly transitioned to a rear-naked choke. And while McGregor has boasted about being a true fighter and champion, he cried uncle.
The official stoppage came at 4:12 in the second round. Damn, how apropos would it have been if Diaz finished McGregor at 4:20?
UFC 196 took place inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
