Anthony Pettis and Edson Barboza (pictured) received the third slot on UFC 197‘s marquee, but the lightweight showdown was considered by many as the most interesting bout in Saturday’s lineup.
A pair of young, flashy standup assassins vying for the same seat.
Well, at least Barboza held up his end of the bargain. Barboza continued to beat Pettis to the punch, and kick, in each and every round. Pettis, who was UFC lightweight champion just three years ago, was completely outclassed.
Barboza took a (29-28, 29-28, 30-27) unanimous decision win, and the tango wasn’t really even that close.
It’s soul searching time for Pettis. “Showtime” has turned to no time. The 29-year-old has now dropped three straight scraps.
UFC 197 took place inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
