A win over undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov would have done more for Tony Ferguson’s case as next in line for a UFC lightweight title tilt, but a possible victory over Michael Chiesa is nothing to sneeze at.
Ferguson was originally slated to face Nurmagomedov at UFC on FOX 19, but was forced to pull out of the April 16 showdown at the last minute with fluid in his lungs. It was announced Sunday that Ferguson will return less than one month later to headline UFC Fight Night 91 opposite Chiesa.
Ferguson is one of the hottest and most dangerous fighters in the division. Most believed “El Cucuy” was closing in quickly on a title tilt after submitting Edson Barboza in December.
Chiesa, meanwhile, is quietly making his way up the 155-pound mountain having rattled off three consecutive victories. He has disposed of his last two victims via submission.
The July 13 event takes place inside Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Fox Sports 1 is expected to broadcast the main card live.
Here is the show’s current lineup:
Scott Holtzman vs. Cody Pfister
Josh Samman vs. Tim Boetsch
Keita Nakamura vs. Kyle Noke
Louis Smolka vs. Ben Nguyen
Tony Ferguson vs. Michael Chiesa
