As previously reported, a welterweight title tilt between champion Robbie Lawler (pictured) and Tyron Woodley will in fact headline UFC 201.
The UFC confirmed the matchup Tuesday via Twitter.
It is an interesting pairing considering both fighters train out of the famed American Top Team squad in Florida.
Lawler is perfect through his past five outings, with the last pair being of the title defense variety. Some were thinking he would face Carlos Condit in an immediate rematch following January’s controversial split decision win, but it appears the UFC decided to feed “Ruthless” some fresh blood instead.
Woodley has won four of his past five fights, including two straight. He has disposed of three of those victims via some form of knockout. “The Chosen One” was chosen as the welterweight top contender after taking a split decision over Kelvin Gastelum in January.
This matchup means Condit will have to prove his mettle against at least one more top tier opponent before getting another crack at the crown, and that Nate Diaz will most likely fight Conor McGregor in his next scrap. There was chatter the UFC would grant Diaz a welterweight title bout after McGregor was pulled from their UFC 200 rematch.
Philips Arena in Atlanta will host the July 30 festivities.
No other bouts have been reported for the lineup.
