For the first time in 26 UFC fights, a long run that was started after winning “The Ultimate Fighter 3” all the way back in 2006, Michael Bisping (pictured) finally fought for a title.
Bisping took the fight on just 17 days’ notice after Chris Weidman was forced to pull out with a neck injury, but that clearly didn’t affect his performance against Luke Rockhold on Saturday at UFC 199.
Rockhold was pure confidence all week leading into the rematch, possibly because he submitted Bisping just four bouts ago or he truly believed he is untouchable. Rockhold appeared very nonchalant in the cage, a little too cool for school perhaps, and Bisping took advantage.
“The Count” caught Rockhold with a left hand and put Rockhold down for the count. After a few bombs on the canvas, Rockhold was out cold.
The official stoppage came at 3:36 in the opening round.
Rockhold was a heavy 7.5-1 odds-on favorite to retain his title, if you’re into that sort of thing.
UFC 199 took place inside The Forum in Inglewood, California.
